Kreitzberg Library Policies

Confidentiality of Kreitzberg Library Records

The Kreitzberg Library maintains a policy of confidentiality of library records. Protecting the privacy of library patrons is an ethical and essential responsibility for all library employees. Patrons have the right to read, view, and listen to library materials without fear of intrusion, intimidation, or reprisal. This right is guaranteed by federal and state laws, and affirmed by the American Library Association Bill of Rights. Federal laws also specifically protect the privacy of student records.

All of the following records of the Kreitzberg Library, especially registration and circulation records, should remain confidential.

Registration records

Registration records include any information the library requires users (faculty, staff, students, alumni, or other registered borrowers) to provide in order to become eligible to access or borrow materials, or use library facilities.

Circulation records

Circulation records include all information that identifies a faculty or staff member, student, alumnus, or other registered borrower as borrowing or accessing particular materials or information. Included in these records are reserve material uses.

Acquisitions records

Acquisitions records include any information that identifies a faculty or staff member, student, alumnus, or other registered borrower as suggesting or ordering specific
library materials.

Other records containing information on individual patron library use

Other records containing information on individual patron library use may include, but are not limited to, Interlibrary Loan records, reference interviews, photocopied materials, web browsing histories, database usage, collection development records, and records of use of library facilities.

No person, including a library employee, volunteer, or work study student, shall disclose any information contained in the above records except in accordance with a warrant or proper judicial order and with the permission of the administrative officer(s) designated by Norwich University to deal with matters of confidentiality.
