Memorandum 26 - Recycling
Purpose
Norwich supports environmental awareness by encouraging recycling and waste management in its business practices and operating procedures. This support includes a commitment to the purchase, use and disposal of products and materials in a manner that will best utilize natural resources and minimize any negative impact on the environment.
Policy
Norwich must, as a minimum, comply with all laws and regulations related to recycling. To this end, Norwich actively promotes the recycling of the following materials:
- computer paper
- white high grade or bond paper
- ledger paper
- mixed or colored paper
- brass
- copper
- iron
- steel
- aluminum
- tires
- motor oil
- tin
- newspaper
- corrugated cardboard
- all beverage containers (per Vermont's bottle bill)
- printer cartridges
Responsibility
Success of this program depends on the entire University Community. Whenever possible employees of Norwich are encouraged to purchase products for the workplace that contain recycled or easily recyclable material. Buying recycled products supports recycling and increases the market for recyclable material. The Chief Administrative Officer will manage the recycling policy.
Implementation
Norwich encourages reducing and, when possible, eliminating the use of disposable products. Source reduction decreases the consumption of valuable resources through such workplace practices as:
- communication through computer networks with E-Mail
- two-sided photocopying
- eliminating fax cover sheets
- reusing paper clips, folders and binders
- reusing packaging material
- reusing wooden pallets
