Central Vermont has a wealth of natural beauty and features to offer students at Norwich University, but no oceans.
No matter. The Geology and Environmental Science Department has figured out a way to teach hands-on skills that students in an oceanography class need to learn. After drilling through the ice of Sunset Lake, 10 minutes from Norwich’s Northfield campus, they learn to take sediment core samples and gather data about temperature, depth patterns and other variables.
Students spend several February class sessions on the ice. The department has been collecting and analyzing data on the lake for two decades, and will continue with new classes of students.
