Board of Trustees Elects New Members

MG Stephen T. Rippe, USA '70 and William Blaine Hawkins each will begin a five-year term on the Board of Trustees, effective April 2006.

Since 2001, MG Stephen T. Rippe has served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation in Washington, D.C., where he oversees and directs the management of the internal and external affairs of the Foundation and leads the Foundation staff. The Foundation is the governance body and operating structure for the Washington National Cathedral, Beauvoir National Cathedral Elementary School, National Cathedral School for Girls, and St. Albans School for Boys.

Prior to his appointment at the Foundation, General Rippe enjoyed 29 years of military service. A member of the Class of 1970, he received a B.S. in Business Administration and was commissioned in infantry as a Distinguished Military Graduate. A graduate of the National War College, he earned a Master of Military Arts and Science from the Advanced Military Studies Program.

During his last three years on active duty, General Rippe served in the Pentagon as the Vice Director/Director of Management for the Joint Staff. His overseas experience includes tours in Korea, Germany, and Kuwait, where he was the senior U.S. military officer.

The recipient of numerous awards and decorations, including the Defense Distinguished Service medal, General Rippe's expertise is recognized by membership in both the Honorable Orders of St. Barbara (Artillery) and St. George (Armor).

A resident of the District of Columbia, he is married to Kate Rice.

A native of Canton, N.C., Wm. Blaine Hawkins graduated in 1967 with a business degree in accounting from UNC at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Beta Alpha Psi, a national scholastic honors society, and Delta Sigma Pi, a national business service fraternity. He received his MBA from the University of Tennessee in 1968.

After serving in the US Army with the Second Armored Division Finance Corps at Fort Hood, Texas, Mr. Hawkins began his business career with Arthur Andersen & Co., working in the Charlotte and Greensboro offices in North Carolina and the Columbia office in South Carolina. Admitted as a partner in 1981, he was put in charge of the Carolinas tax practice in 1987.

Currently the managing partner of Hawkins, Conrad, Brinson & Co., PLLC, a certified public accounting firm in Charlotte, NC, Mr. Hawkins specializes in tax and business planning services for closely held businesses and individuals. A member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the North and South Carolina CPA associations, he holds special AICPA designations in both personal financial planning and business valuation. During his business career, Mr. Hawkins has been active as a member and officer of local United Way and Chamber of Commerce boards. He is an appointed member of the Mecklenburg County Board of Equalization and Review and serves on the administrative board of his local church.

The parent of one daughter, he currently resides with his wife, Robin, in Charlotte, N.C.
