Senior Athletes Recognized by MGAA
Nearly 50 Norwich senior student athletes were recently honored for their accomplishments at the inaugural Senior Athlete Recognition Reception hosted by the Maroon and Gold Athletic Association. Coaches from the 15 varsity and four club sports presented each senior athlete with a certificate of achievement acknowledging his or her contributions to their sport.
Norwich Athletics Director Tony Mariano presented Athlete of the Year awards to Matt Zilinski and Allison Flynn. Zilinski, a four year varsity swimmer, was a member of Norwich relay teams that set team records in the 200 free relay, the 400 free relay, the 800 free relay, the 200 medley relay, and the 400 medley relay. Earlier this year Zilinski received the Bob Muir Award, given to the senior who has accumulated the most points over four years at the New England Championships. Flynn, who led the Cadets to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000, was earlier named as Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Year. Norwich recorded its first NCAA Tournament victory in program history with a 76-63 triumph over Maine-Farmington in the opening round.
Each student also received a complimentary membership to the Maroon and Gold Athletic Association, an organization that supports all sports at Norwich.
At the conclusion of the formal portion of the reception, BG Mike Kelley, Vice President for Student Affairs, thanked the student athletes for their participation, both individually and collectively. "Every time you put on the Norwich uniform, win or lose, you do Norwich proud. Thank you for being the ambassadors that you are."
