Point 'Em Downhill!
Norwich Alumni Ski Gala in Breckenridge, Keystone and Vail
What do good friendships, cobalt blue skies, great parties, super cruising runs and the Norwich Spirit have in common? All came together when advancement staff joined Colorado Alumni Club hosts Paul Angotti ’67 and Chuck Winn ’91 for a fabulous weekend at the Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado.
Twenty-five alumni from the Classes of 1954 to 2002, joined in the 3rd Annual Norwich Alumni Ski Weekend, held March 2-5. The skiers hailed from Hawaii, Florida, California, Utah, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Vermont, and of course, Colorado.
The weekend began with a ski day held at Keystone Resort with NU Assistant VP Rick Van Arnam '84 and Reunion Gifts Officer Giff Slater '79 leading the charge down the back bowls of Keystone. Van Arnam offered his seasoned ski techniques to Norwich greats John Henninger '75 and Mark Sullivan '85, while Paul Angotti '67 did his “Billy Kidd” impersonation with the black cowboy hat!
The après ski party took place at the Back Country Brewery in Frisco with early arrivals Jim Black ’77, Chuck Winn ’91, Dale Lavigne ’80, Jim Tiernan ’90, Bill Greenlee ’83, Al Williams ’54 and Carin Caselli ’02, whose parents Ray and Dolores also attended. The highlight of the evening was a laptop "flyby" presentation by Rick about the upcoming capital building projects for the new Norwich Student Campus Center, Civilian Dorms and Gordon Sullivan Museum.
On Friday, the Norwich skiers met at Peak 9 Breckenridge Mountain, and were handed a special hat with the words “Point 'Em Downhill” (one alum's response when asked which trail he wanted to ski on)! Ray Yelle '79 joined with Mark Dahm '82, Bill Greenlee '83 and Rick Van Arnam '84 for some cruising and carving runs down Peaks 8 and 9, discovering the Summit and a wild downhill experience they won’t forget!
Paul Angotti '67 lead a group up Imperial Peak at 12,998 feet to ski double black diamonds, and was heard to say had he known it was dangerous, he would have taken the easy trail down. Chuck Winn ’91 said “Let’s Go.” Paul replied, “I’ll follow,” and looking down over the cliff Chuck remarked, “That must be what the Caution sign was for!”
Trevor Albertson '02 and Dave DiVesta '78 skied with John Henninger '75, and managed to exceed 21,000 vertical feet of skiing in one day. Henninger was dubbed “Mr. Retro” for wearing a solid blue jump suit with matching back pack, and using 15-year-old 200 cm straight skies.
On Saturday night there was a “Hail and Farewell” dinner at the Hearthstone Restaurant in Breckenridge, where Giff Slater '79 gave an update on NU athletics, admissions and academics. Celebrating their golden wedding anniversary were Breckenridge residents Chuck and Ellie Tyler ’55, married 50 years and still honeymooning!
