McLean Scores Four as Cadets Rout Wesleyan

NORTHFIELD, VT- Kurtis McLean scored a natural hat trick in the first 17:06 of the first period, and finished with four goals and two assists on the afternoon to lead top-ranked Norwich University to an 11-3 win over Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon.

McLean’s performance caps a week in which he tallied four goals in a non-conference win over Fitchburg State on Tuesday, and dished out two assists in a win over Trinity on Friday night.

McLean netted his first at 2:33 of the first period from the slot off of a feed from Paul Mattucci from behind the net. McLean’s shot misfired, but still had enough to get past Wesleyan goalie Jim Panczykowski.

McLean netted his second at 7:52 on a rebound of a Mario Chinelli shot, then found the back of the net for the third time at 17:06 when Chinelli found McLean with a centering pass from the right side, with McLean beating Panczykowski.

Wesleyan quickly answered McLean’s third goal, when John DelGiudice tallied at 17:41 on the breakout on feed from Chris Graceffa, then Jarred Gagnon tallied with just 2.4 seconds left in the period, knocking in a rebound of Alex Shaine’s shot.

Norwich regained a two-goal lead at 6:25 of the period when Nick Cote tipped a LouDiMasi shot past Pnnczykowsi on the power play to give the Cadets a 4-2 lead.

Wesleyan cut the lead back to 4-3 when Alex Shaine picked up a loose puck at the top of the crease on the PP and flipped it to the upper left corner at 12:21 of the second to cut the Cadets’ lead back to 4-3.

Paul Mattucci scored back-to-back goals to close the second period, and the Cadets scored five unanswered goals in the third period to post the 11-3 win.

McLean netted his fourth of the night at 17:30 of the third period, tipping in a Chinelli slap shot for the final goal of the game.

Norwich won its 14th straight game, in improving to 16-1 on the season, and 11-0 in the ECAC East. The Cadets now have a commanding six point lead on New England College in the ECAC East Standings.
