Faculty retirees honored at NUCC parade
Four
Norwich University faculty members who will be retiring at the end of
this year were honored during last Friday's NUCC parade in Shapiro Field
House: Floyd Stuart, Charles A. Dana Professor of English; Roy Bair, Professor
of Biology; Colonel Mark A. Costa, USMC; and Master Sergeant Max McIntyre,
Army ROTC. President Richard W. Schneider read citations praising the
contributions of all four faculty members, after which Colonel Costa and
MSG McIntyre were presented with tarbuckets by Cadet Colonel Jacob Sotiriadis,
NUCC Regimental Commander. Professors Bair and Stuart were unable to attend
Friday's ceremonies. A transcript of the citations follows.
Floyd
Stuart, Charles A. Dana Professor of English
For 38 years, Professor Floyd Stuart has been a valued member of our
faculty. He began as an Instructor in English and is today the Charles
A. Dana Professor of English. During his time here, he has served on almost
every departmental standing committee, numerous ad hoc committees and
has offered his services as an Acting Department Head on two separate
occasions. He has developed several popular courses while on our faculty,
including Advanced Composition and Literature of the Sea.
A
prolific poet, Professor Stuart has published over 100 works of poetry
and has also had several pieces of short fiction appear in national publications
like Harpers and The Atlantic.
Roy Bair, Professor of Biology
For just under 30 years, Professor Roy Bair was an integral part of our
Math and Sciences division. During his time at Norwich, he taught biology
and gave our bio and nursing majors sound background in anatomy and physiology.
For many years, Professor Bair ran our pre-med program and many NU alumni
with an M.D. after their names count Professor Bair among those responsible
for helping them accomplish their professional
aspirations. We wish him a rewarding retirement at his home in East Montpelier.
Colonel Mark Costa, USMC
Colonel Costa assumed command of Naval ROTC at Norwich in August 2001,
from the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow, CA, where he was Commanding
Officer. Over his 30-year career in the United States Marine Corps, Colonel
Costa has held several senior staff assignments and wears
several personal decorations, including the Legion of Merit with gold
star.
During his time at Norwich, Colonel Costa has established himself as
an admired leader, earning the respect of faculty, staff and students
alike.
MSG Max McIntyre, Army ROTC
MSG McIntyre is a senior military instructor for our Army ROTC. During
his impressive career with the US Army, MSG McIntyre has earned a long
list of notable awards and decorations, including several foreign awards
from Thailand, Honduras, Egypt, Canada, Australia and other nations. His
breadth of expertise has been an invaluable asset to our Army ROTC students.
Best wishes to MSG McIntyre, his wife and children as he begins the next
step in his career.
