Map Information (1)The construction of the Centennial Stairs was authorized by the Board of Trustees on April 4, 1919 and was completed by October of that year, funded by friends and alumni of Norwich University. Each granite step bears the name of a distinguished alumnus, past cadet, or official of Norwich.
Water seepage had always remained a problem, causing cracks to propagate in the stairs. To correct this problem, the stairs were dismantled and rebuilt in 1962. In the process, thirteen damaged steps were replaced.
Goodyear Indoor Pool is housed in a brick addition to the Plumley Armory. It was completed in the Spring of 1962 then upgraded and renovated in 1995. The pool is 14 yards wide and 25 yards long with 5 seven-foot lanes.
The pool was named after Major General A. Conger Goodyear, who gifted the majority of the $346,349 cost of installation as well as the cost of the architectural services. A graduate from Yale University in 1899, General Goodyear remained an officer in the New York National Guard and was a veteran of both World Wars. (See also Goodyear Hall).
Athletic Field
The land known as Howard Field was purchased in 1895-96 through financial assistance provided by General O.O. Howard, USA. It was initially used for riding and polo, then for football practice, soccer, tennis, and baseball after the end of cavalry training at Norwich. Today, Howard Field is used by the varsity soccer and lacrosse programs.
