Norwich Professor Frances Chevalier, with the assistance of Joan
Davidson, adjunct professor of French, organized an academic field
trip to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, for students of French.
On Nov.17, twenty students experienced a "living lab" situation
where they were required to use the French language to exchange
money at the bank; to order their meal at L'Imprvu, a French-style
restaurant; to discuss artwork with the artists at the 10th annual
Qubecois art exhibit, Rencontre; and to sample desserts described
in their textbooks at a ptisserie.
To welcome the visitors from Norwich University, the mayor of Saint-Jean, Myroslaw Smereka, prepared a reception at the city hall with the local press. The mayor presented a pin of the insignia of the city to each student and faculty member and discussed the structure of the government in Canada in French and in English.
Roger Leger, professor (ret.) of the cole Militaire de Saint Jean and member of the Alliance Franaise-Cercle Qubecois of Burlington, VT, prepared the program details in Quebec and helped insure an all-French language and Qubecois cultural experience for the students.
This trip was made financially possible because of fund-raising
efforts of the Norwich University French Club and donations from
the Alliance Franaise arranged by Eric Bataille, president of the
Alliance.
French Club officers and representatives Brock Lambert, Stephanie Koenig, Pierre Cotton, David Sherwood, and Kyrill Dancik are planning activities for another class-trip visit to Quebec province Spring 2001.
