Dear Editor: Letters from the NU Community

Dear Editor:

Because of the lack of integrity at this school, there have been many instances during this first semester where cadets in the corps have had belongings stolen right out of their rooms. The honor system says that a cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do. I know that in many cases this might be difficult to live by but here at this school it is something that we pledge we will do. There are people at this school who don't lock their doors when they leave the room because they trust the people at this school.

After seeing what has happened in the last two months, the trust that some of those people had has been lost. Rook buddies that were once our supposed best friends have stolen credit cards, laptops, wallets and other personal belongings. For some reason once cadets are part of the corps they feel as though they own it and can do whatever they want here. What they don't know is that they will get caught. Most of us trust our friends not to steal from us and with the honor code there are many of us that feel even safer knowing that there will be consequences if there is someone who decides to break that code.

There are other reasons that some of the people here cannot be trusted. Many of the people at this school did not have to do much to get here. I feel that the acceptance rate of rooks has been increasing because of the corps insecurity with its future. By letting in more and more people, it doesn't necessarily increase the dependency of the corps future. There are some that just come here for the school name when they get out. Not all of the newcomers are willing to live by the Norwich traditional code of ethics. I feel that there should be a higher standard for the acceptance rate of new cadets at this school.
