Dear Editor: Letters from the NU Community

Dear Editor,

I find it strange that Norwich University does not get a longer break for winter vacation. Most schools receive four to five weeks of rest and relaxation.

Depending on when a Norwich student's last final is, they get two to three weeks of vacation. I thought this short break was because we get out of classes in the spring in early May.

Then, one of my friends brought to my attention that they get out of school only one or one and a half weeks later. Norwich students also come back earlier from summer vacation. If a student plays a fall sport or is chosen to be cadre, they have to be back on campus around mid August.

I believe that if a student decides to take on an extra responsibility to the university, it is their choice but for those who don't, they deserve to stay at home for as long as possible. Even though they might get a longer break, classes start up in late August.

I understand that the university that we attend is unique in itself but I think the students and the faculty deserve a longer vacation time. I am just curious about why this happens and I would like to know some of the facts.

Thank you,
Maggie Dennison
