Abraham has been hired as the new chief of security, filling the
vacancy left by the resignation of Larry Mayo on Feb. 23
Abraham will take over the position Monday, Mar. 26, replacing
Gary Atwood, who has been acting chief.
"The position was advertised in the papers, and I just put my resume in,
along with the other candidates," Abraham said, adding that when
he was notified he was hired for the position he was excited.
"It's an opportunity to head up the security department, and I'm still serving
the university and the students here," he said.
Part of Abraham's new job includes working with the Occupational Safety
and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Vermont Occupational Safety and
Health Administration (VOSHA) to maintain safety on campus when using
hazardous materials.
Abraham said he is prepared for most parts of the job, adding that
learning about those aspects he's not familiar with will make him more
versatile.
"I find those to be an exciting challenge," he said, "and I'm sure I'll
be going to school to learn more about the hazardous materials."
Until Abraham takes over as chief, he will continue working as
asst. commandant. Abraham said that when he leaves the position in the
commandant's office, it would likely remain unfilled until the university
can hire a replacement.
Abraham, who has been serving as an assistant commandant for about three
years, said his replacement would probably have a strong military
background. "They usually look for someone that has military experience or
has retired from the military. It will just depend on who's available."
Abraham is reluctant to speculate what changes he may see for security
at this point. Abraham said he hasn't had the opportunity to "talk with my
staff or sit down with the director of facilities operations and go over
some of the things. If I started talking about changes now, I'd be
putting the cart before the horse."
Abraham said he is eager to start the new job, emphasizing that he's
looking to communicate with both the corps and civilian students.
"If there's something that may be problematic that we need to work on
together," he said. "I plan on communicating and disseminating that
communication as widely as possible so that people know what's going on."
