Dole auditorium was thrown back a few decades on Friday, Jan. 16, when the women's softball team sponsored the student- run game Lets Make a Deal, based on the late 1960s game show hosted by Monte Hall.

Students were asked to bring items that they could then exchange to play the game on stage. With many options to upgrade their prizes, not knowing what was under the next box, according to Engineering Professor Dennis Tyner, who is also the women's softball coach.

"There were a lot of cool things you could win, and it was funny watching people lose out on big prizes. My roommate won a DVD/VCR combo, which was pretty cool," said Stephen Hodgson, 20, a communications major from Dover, N.H.

Other prizes included a range of value from a home theater system to $240. They also missed on big prizes such as a TV and a Sony Playstation, which had been used for Casino Night, another Women's Softball fundraiser held on Saturday, Jan. 24 in Milano Ballroom.

Students played everything from craps to poker, winning chips that they later turned in for raffle tickets, which were used for a prize drawing at the end of the night.

One ring to rule them all. That is the catch phrase of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and we are now seeing it fulfilled in real life.

The 61st annual Golden Globe awards were held on Sunday, Jan. 25, in Los Angles, Calif. Many of Hollywood's A-list stars were on hand for the ceremony, sporting their best outfits.

Peter Jackson's trilogy based upon J.R.R. Tolkien's epic books was one of the night's biggest winners, taking home four awards in the categories of Best Motion Picture (drama), Best Director (Peter Jackson), Best Original Score, and Best Song ("Into the West").

Charlize Theron took the Best Female Actress award for her role in "Monster", winning over Nicole Kidman and Uma Thuman. Bill Murray took top honors for his role in "Lost in Translation." Murray beat out Hollywood greats such as Jack Nicholson, Johnny Depp, and Billy Bob Thorton.

Silver Screen Productions was not the only recipient of multiple awards. HBO's miniseries "Angels in America" took home five awards in the categories of Best Miniseries, Best Actor and Actress in a Miniseries, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Miniseries.

The cast and producers of "Lord of the Rings" will have to give many more acceptance speeches, if the Golden Globe awards are any indication of what will happen at the upcoming Academy Awards, which will air on Feb. 29.
