In The NewsFebruary 13, 2003 McIntyre to teach leadership classes each weekBy Benjamin Hannur MSG Mark McIntyre wants all the students at Norwich to use their best judgment. That is one reason he will present one-hour leadership classes to all corporals in Cabot 85 from 6-7 p.m. every Monday. McIntyre has gained experience through holding various leadership positions, from squad leader to Acting Battalion Command Sergeant Major. He served with the Tenth Special Forces Group at Fort Devens, Mass.; he was First and Third Battalions' First Sergeant at Fort Lewis, Wash., and also at the Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg, N.C. "I was First Sergeant where I was for two years, and that was a rewarding job; I think that it was an extraordinarily rewarding job," McIntyre said. He is a member of the Army ROTC faculty at Norwich University. "In the Special Forces we train masses of foreign soldiers using their language, but as First Sergeant I could finally train soldiers using only English; that was a plus." He taught leadership to Special Forces NCOs while assigned as a senior small group leader for the United States Army John F. Kennedy Special Warefare Center's Special Forces NCO Academy. When McIntyre was nearing 20 years of service, he decided he wanted an ROTC assignment in New England. "There was a spot becoming available at Norwich, so I called the right people, and I got the job," McIntyre said. He continues to teach leadership and hone his skills while dealing with cadets at Norwich University. "When I got here, I fell in love with the place; I fell in love with the goals of the university. I am sure of the fact when you say the right things to students on campus, it influences their lives," said McIntyre. "People make wrong decisions; people fly off the handle; people get out of control; but at the same time there's a lot that happens on the U.P. and in the barracks that people don't see, the good instances of outstanding leadership. I emphasize these examples of leadership; these intangibles are what make Norwich a great institution," said McIntyre. On Monday nights McIntyre will be presenting blocks of instruction to the corporals. "Leadership instruction will begin to corporals; it falls [in] line with the U.S. Army's NCO Education System," McIntyre said. The corporals are the target audience, because they are the first line supervisors. "The first block I am going to present is Duties, Responsibilities, and Authority of the NCO," said McIntyre. Other blocks of instruction will deal with mentoring and motivation. Mentoring deals with being a good role model for subordinates by teaching and setting the example of "what right is," according to McIntyre. "Motivation is simple; motivation is nothing more than giving somebody the will to do something. Grab the attention of subordinates in positive ways, and run with it," said McIntyre. "Training on any topic is supposed to be tough, challenging, and demanding at times, but never reckless; quality training provided by quality leaders forges units that have a positive sense of esprit de corps." The best-bonded units are the units that do a lot together and go through a lot of challenging training together, like the Infantry, Special Forces, and Ranger Units, according to McIntyre. "Norwich has many of these same qualities; more leadership instruction, and its application will enhance the Norwich experience," said McIntyre. |
