Shock Platoon prepares for spring competitions

Brian Hickey has been a member of the Norwich shock platoon for the past two years.

"We practiced at least two hours every day since the beginning of the year," said Hickey, 19, a sophomore criminal justice major from Orlando, Fla.

Over Thanksgiving break 2002, 15 members of the Norwich drill team went to a competition at Cornell University. The team went up against 22 different schools from around the country, including the military academies.

"This was the first real competition since we have been reorganized," said Blake Jackson, 19, a sophomore English major from Rahway, N.J. There are only two juniors on the team and the rest are all sophomores and freshmen. "We enjoy the fact that we're young," Jackson said.

While at the drill competition, each team has a rifle inspection. Also prior to going, the competition the team practices a routine that every team performs and is judged on, according to Hickey. The team placed fourth.

Jackson and Angoy placed first in a two-man trick competition.

"It's two cadets out there spinning," said Jackson.

Jackson also placed first in the knock out competition. For this event, cadets are eliminated one by one as mistakes are made on commands.

The team also took first place for the four-man color guard. Overall, the Norwich shock platoon placed second out of all the schools.

Greg Wortman, 19, a sophomore criminal justice major from Kannapolis, N.C., joined the shock platoon his freshman year with no experience with drill and ceremony.

"Once they announced we took second place, I can't even describe the feeling," said Wortman.

"I was really nervous; it was my first drill competition ever," said Wortman. "It's really tense and really nerve-racking; it's a feeling you can't really describe."

In addition to the Cornell competition, the shock platoon will take part in many different competitions around the US.

This month, the shock platoon will be going to New Orleans for the college nationals.

The team will also be marching in the Mardi Gras parade. They will be going to competitions in March at Villanova and RPI.

"Out of all the units on the hill, we go out to represent the school the most," said Jackson.

The school has helped with some of the trips that the shock platoon goes on, like the trip to New Orleans, but they have to raise a lot on their own.

The team does things like selling T-shirts and items at the football games.

"It's hard; a lot of times we have to pay out of our own pockets. This year, the school has been really supportive of us," said Hickey.
