"There's nothing to do around here," is easily one of the
most common mantras uttered at Norwich. For a very long time it was the
truth, as well, but no longer. Students can now find activities each weekend
to help break the monotony and tedium of a college life of study, thanks
to Student Activities, Chan Stowell and S-5. Since the beginning of the
school year, these individuals have worked to provide safe and entertaining
diversions for Norwich students. Everything form foam parties and DJs
to hot tubs and snowmobiling have found a place in the weekend schedule
on campus.
This continuous effort to provide the student body with new, fun ways
to spend their free time should be commended by everyone on campus. Instead,
students continue to complain about the lack of activities, while they,
in many cases, do not even attend the planned events. There is no justification
in condemning activities before they take place, or afterwards without
having been there. To those students who argue that the planned activities
are not for them, then what is for you? And would you go if activities
you suggest were planned?
It must be argued that large-scale activities cannot be held, or even
contemplated, until a large portion of the student body backs the activities
that do take place. Think of them as stepping stones. On the other side,
does the complaining stem from a lack of options, or out of a desire to
merely complain? People planning these activities are to be commended
for their continued enthusiasm despite ridicule and lack of participation.
Those students who are complaining ought to think about the effort put
into planning and the diversity of the student body that must be considered
for each event before condemning it. Perhaps even try attending before
arguing. And if what is planned truly isn't for you, then bring your interests
to those who can help. Lack of participation does nothing to help and
only makes planning more exciting events harder.
