Dear Editor (letters from the NU Community)

I have an issue about the mailboxes that are given out at Norwich. I am a commuter student, and I have to share a mailbox with three other people. I pay just as much tuition as everyone else; the only difference is that I do not pay to live on campus. The people that live on campus do not have to share a mailbox, so why should the commuter students have to? Norwich should make enough mail boxes for the entire student body to have. Another problem with sharing mailboxes is privacy. What if someone opens your mail, or what if he or she takes it by accident? That is not okay. Commuter students expect to be given the same options as all the other students. Every person that attends Norwich should have their own mailbox.

I would like to commend the school on the recent transformation it has made of the gym. In the old gym, we were constantly toiling with broken equipment and too few weights. I doubt the gym could have passed any safety standards. So many free weights were missing that some of the increments were as much as 20 pounds. Cables were constantly breaking, the free weights were falling apart, and much of the Nautilus equipment was not oiled properly. The condition of the gym was very dangerous.

Well, that has all changed. There are two sets of most every weight increment, which cuts down on the waiting time, and one no longer has to fear for his or her life when using the lat pull down machine. This new gym is state of the art and just what was needed.

Now, every day going to the gym is a joy as long as you can get there when it is open. We would like to see the gym open later during the week and have extended weekend hours. I am not the only student requesting this; I have heard the same complaint from many people. We would love to use this new gym, but the hours of operation don't allow all of us to. Any extension of the gym hours would be greatly appreciated.

I'm writing this letter to praise the Learning Support Center and all faculty and staff that give their time there to the students that come for help. I found this amazing resource last year as a freshman. Also a member of the Corps of Cadets, I was often stressed by the amount of work that I had to do for my classes and the very little time that I had to do it. I went to the LSC (Learning Support Center) almost as often as I could, and never received anything but reassurance and encouragement. The staff members at the Learning Support Center are some of the most patient and understanding people that I have encountered in my life. One woman in particular has been my saving grace time and time again. For Professor Paula Gills, her position is more than just a nine to five job. She dedicates every ounce of her energy to the school, primarily to the benefit of the students. I met Professor Gills the summer before I came to Norwich while I was enrolled in summer school here, and I can't say enough about what a wonderful person she is and how she shows her concerns for all the students at Norwich. I'm a sophomore now and I still go to the Learning Support Center for help. Their staff is knowledgeable in just about every academic subject you can imagine, and for those of you who haven't been down to the LSC, yet, I highly recommend it. You won't regret it!
