Recently, Norwich University has been the subject of numerous newspaper articles, television newscasts and radio broadcasts surrounding the dismissal of three members of our Corps of Cadets for violating University policies. Our investigation into this misconduct is now complete.

In the process of dormitory health and safety inspections during semester break, violations of University policy were discovered, including the possession of stolen property and evidence of student involvement in an unauthorized, fraternity-like organization.

The students involved were charged upon return from break. In light of the evidence against them, several Cadets withdrew from school. The three Cadets who were dismissed on Tuesday, January 15, went through our judicial administrative system, including an appeal process, and were dismissed. Seventeen others who were linked to this group have been disciplined by the University.

I will not tell you that this is the first such "underground" organization we have had at Norwich since our founding in 1819. I will also not promise you that this will be the last. Such groups have existed in the past under different names, and others may still exist at this very moment. My message to you today is that these groups will not be tolerated. Furthermore, any student found to be involved in such a group faces swift discipline and possible dismissal.

Norwich is dedicated to providing you with the strongest learning environment possible. It is my hope that this type of punishment sends a clear message that these organizations have no place here. I want all of you to have productive and rewarding collegiate careers.

I encourage you to get involved with the many authorized student- and faculty-run organizations available to you here on campus. Join an intramural sports team, try to land a role with a Pegasus Players production or write a letter to the editor for the Guidon. There are many opportunities to join an academic, religious, military or community service group here on campus and in Northfield. Take advantage of your time here and all that Norwich University has to offer.
