NU Women's basketball takes winning ways into playoffsBy Tim Kyrkostas Norwich University's women's basketball team received the second seed in the ECAC Tournament and will face seventh-seeded Wellesley College in Northfield at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The Cadets finished the season 20-6 overall; they have won 15 of their last 17 games, with the two losses at the hands of tenth-ranked Emmanuel College, including a 79-62 loss on Saturday in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship on Saturday. In the game before the quarterfinals versus Pine Manor, sophomore Jamie Abrams scored 11 points and collected seven steals in a 71-46 victory. Shevon Gibbons also scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Gibbons won the Great Northeast Athletic Conference regular season scoring title at 20.2 points per game. On Friday, February 15, the number two Cadets defeated Suffolk by the score of 64-62 in the GNAC semifinals. They advanced to the championship game, where they played Emmanuel. Norwich is led offensively by Shevon Gibbons (19.8 points per game, 7.4 rebounds per game), sophomore guard Lisa Belmonte (10.5 ppg., 4.1 assists per game, 40 three-point baskets), sophomore guard Erin Bresette (9.2 ppg., 3.5 apg.) and sophomore guard Jamie Abrams (9.0 ppg., 43-for-104 from three-point distance). Wellesley is 16-8 and is coming off a 64-46 loss in the NEWMAC championship game against Springfield on Saturday.
