Sophomore Elisabeth Burge stepped onto the field not knowing what
lay ahead for her and for the team on Oct. 3, warming herself up
as she usually does.
She and the Norwich women's soccer team made a statement against
Castleton State College, defeating them 10-0, while Burge, a Norwich
sophomore majoring in physical education, from Hartford, Vt., tied
Norwich's record for most goals in a single game: four. Sophomore
Angela Ferraris added three goals and two assists.
"I just got myself ready for the game like I do any other;
I just didn't expect to do this well and score three goals in the
first half," Burge said.
In the first half of the game, Burge scored three goals, striking
up top for the women's team, assisted by sophomore Michelle Rouleau,
junior Lynn Lust, and sophomore Angela Ferraris, the three midfielders.
Angela Ferraris scored the other two goals for the Women Cadets,
to bring the score to 5-0 in the first half.
"We worked good as a team up front, and we dominated most
of the game. Castleton also did have a weak defense, but it still
feels good to get the win," said sophomore Angela Ferraris,
a criminal justice major from Burlington, Conn.
Michelle Rouleau tied the Norwich Women's soccer record for the
most assists in a single season and also tied the school record
with two of her three assists in the first half of the game. Rouleau,
a forward, also scored a goal, herself, and had the assist to give
Burge her first goal.
"It really doesn't matter to me if I tie or beat a record
for the most assists in a season; I'm just glad that I'm able to
contribute to the team and help win, and I know the team feels the
same way that I do," said sophomore Michelle Rouleau, a communications
major from Fairbanks, Alaska.
In the second half, Ferraris and Burge both scored again, wearing
the defense down and allowing the strong midfielders, Lynn Lust,
Shanda Desrosiers and Rouleau, to score the next goals to bring
the score to 10-0.
"It felt good to go out there and have a strong win against
a team with a respectable name, even though we knew they didn't
have a good record this year, it's important to still play strong
and not let up," said junior Lynn Lust, a physical education
major from Germantown, Md.
The women's soccer team's record now stands at 8-6, with a 5-3
record in the GNAC conference and an upcoming game at Emmanuel College
on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
