Gibbons leads women's basketball team to strong start

The Norwich Women's basketball team is looking forward to a long season with new teammates and many veterans returning to play their third consecutive time in the GNAC. They hope to win it once again.

"I feel as if we have a good team again this year; we all work hard, and we expect to do a lot for the program this year," said senior Kelly Kane, 21, communications major from Cicero, N.Y.

The Cadets opened the season at Keene State Tipoff Classic. They won the first game versus Westfield State 69-62. In the championship game, the Cadets lost 88-75. With this loss, the Cadets fell to 1-1.

In the Cadets' home opener versus Colby Sawyer, Norwich won 78-56. The record went to 2-1.

In the Cadets' next home game, they played Plattsburgh, and the Cardinals slipped past the Cadets 56-55. Freshman forward Shevon Gibbons led the Cadets with 20 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots in the loss. Senior forward Kelly Kane (Cicero, N.Y.) had a chance to win the game with five seconds left, but her shot, just inside the arc, bounced off the back of the rim, and the Cardinals held on for the one point victory. Sophomore guard Lisa Belmonte chipped in nine points for Norwich (2-2 overall).

On December 1, the Cadets lost another close game to Springfield College with a score of 45-43. The Pride were able to limit freshman forward Shevon Gibbons, who was averaging 25.3 points per game, to just eight points. Gibbons had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but her shot bounced just off the rim. Sophomore guard Jamie Abrams led the Cadets (2-3 overall) with ten points. Senior forward Kelly Kane added a game-high 13 rebounds.

The team has four new freshman whom they feel can have a large impact on the court when they get in there, not to leave out those who have returned with the experience of playing in this league before.

"The freshmen that we have on our team are good players, and there is no competition between any of us; we all want what's best for the team, and that's to win and work hard," said Kane.

Last year, the women's team went 17-9 in an overall record and is working hard to beat that record and have a good season once again this year.

"I love the girls on the team, and I want us to succeed in what we are working for, and that is to win our games and our conference this year," said sophomore Lisa Belmonte, 19, a physical education major from Levittown, N.Y.

The team this year has had three games and has only won one, but they still plan to work hard and succeed in their goals.

The Cadets are currently on a three game winning streak. They have had wins against St. Joseph's of Maine (77-73), New England College (80-49), and Lyndon (80-38).

Freshmen Shevon Gibbons connected on seven of nine shots for 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to give Saint Joseph's (Maine) their first loss of the year on Saturday.

Gibbons scored 15 points and collected six steals in Norwich's 80-38 win over Lyndon State on Tuesday. Lisa Belmonte scored 18 points and added five rebounds and four assists against St. Joe's.

The Cadets are now 5-3; they will be playing in the Warner Southern Tournament in Florida on Jan. 4 & 5.
