Renovations and Additions

campus center

In the fall of 2004, PDR|P was engaged to work on conceptual design and programming for renovations and additions to the Harmon Hall Campus Center. PDR|P is currently in the design phases of this project. Portions of the existing 55,000 gsf building will be demolished, and additional square footage will be added, bringing the Campus Center to a total of approximately 69,000 gsf.

Exterior program was also considered extensively and includes a dining terrace along the south face of the building with an exterior fireplace and a wholesale consideration of the quad space to the west of Harmon Hall. The quad space is flattened and the sloping topography of the perimeter is used to its best advantage as a natural ampitheater. The flat area can be used for casual recreation in the summer and in the winter, can be transformed into a temporary ice skating surface.

The project will serve as the social hub of the campus. The dining hall will include a double-height wintergarden. The building will be a glass jewel-box, nested in the brick base of the old building. This will highlight the views from the campus into the building, and the views from the building out to the campus and the landscape beyond. The building will also redefine the relationship of the campus to Route 12 by reinvigorating the south and east facades.
