Leadership Challenge Weekend

Leadership Challenge Weekend (LCW) is designed to expose the college bound student to life at the nation's first senior military college, while providing a worthwhile leadership experience through the development of individual leadership skills and teamwork. Students participate as members of a team during the course and receive instruction in leadership principles and effective communications. Students also participate the following:

  • Physical Fitness Training
  • Leadership Reaction Course
  • Olympic Challenge Course
  • Water Survival Training
  • Introduction to Rock Climbing

Prerequisites

You should only apply if you are interested in pursuing a college education, attending a Federal Academy, military college and/or applying for a Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship. Applicants must be a sophomore, junior or senior in high school and possess a 2.5 GPA or above. Junior ROTC Commanders are welcome to request up to 10 seats during any LCW except the Youth Leadership Conference in March 2010.

Weekend Activities

Friday evening is spent in the classroom getting to know your fellow team members and learning effective communication skills. Saturday morning begins with physical fitness training followed by a trip through the Leadership Reaction Course. Classes on the Effective Team Leader and Team Follower are conducted after brunch followed by team competition on the Olympic Challenge Course. After dinner, a short film and then participation in student campus activities. On Sunday, students rotate through the climbing wall and water survival skills training. After a small graduation ceremony we say good-bye to new found friends.

2nd Annual Youth Leadership Conference

The Military Order of World Wars (MOWW) Region One (New England) will host its 2nd Annual Green Mountain Youth Leadership Conference (YLC) at Norwich University. The MOWW selects (20) individuals from the New England area each year and Norwich accepts (40) other high school students from across the nation. This is a nationally recognized leadership educational program conducted by retired military officers. The educational portion of the curriculum is composed of 50% Leadership, 30% American Heritage and Patriotism and 20% Free Enterprise.

Conference Prerequisites

Students who would like to attend this joint YLC/LCW are required to attach an essay of 500 words or less entitled: "The Bill of Rights and My Responsibilities" describing what this means to them as a United States Citizen. All applications and essays should be received prior to March 12, 2010 to be favorably considered.

Conference Weekend Activities

Friday night a special opening ceremony and introduction to the "Keys of the Constitution" followed by a discussion concerning events leading up to the Revolutionary War. Saturday begins with Water Survival training, a Leadership Reaction Course, interspersed with seminars on leadership. In the evening, presentations on "Free Enterprise" and a student exchange on "The Bill of Rights and My Responsibilities". (There will be a test). Sunday, an early morning team competition on the Olympic Challenge Course followed by a cloing ceremony and presentation of certificates. Awards of U.S. Savings Bonds will be presented to the most outstanding students based on their essay, test results, and individual performance during the program.

Costs

There is a $50 fee for each participant. The fee will cover all meals, a t-shirt and certificate for completing the program. Your only other cost is travel to and from the University. The fee should be returned with the application, as space is limited to only 60 participants per session.
