Tasha Humphreys
Lifestyle: Traditional, commuter
Major: Nursing
Tasha Humphreys laughs when the label “traditional student” is used to describe her. That’s because at many universities and colleges that term describes students in their late teens or early twenties, fresh out of high school and often just leaving home for the first time. But for Humphreys, none of the above apply. At thirty years old, the wife and mother of four certainly does defy Norwich’s definition of “traditional student.”
I feel confident that when I graduate, I will be very knowledgeable in my field and I’ll be prepared to lead. And that’s what Norwich does, it trains you to be a leader
~ Tasha Humphreys
Humphreys was born in Texas, raised in Louisiana and later relocated to Florida where she met her husband. Sometime after that the young family moved to Maine, and from there, to Vermont in 2003. Despite all the moving around, Humphreys managed in that time to acquire her GED and become an LNA, all part of her goal to better herself through education. Once in Vermont, she began studying at a community college where a teacher told her that she should look into Norwich’s Nursing Program. From that point on, her life changed dramatically.
“I took baby steps the whole way — getting my GED and my LNA license,” Humphreys said. “When I did apply to Norwich and I received my acceptance letter, it was the best day of my life. Well, after having my kids and my wedding day.”
Now three years closer to receiving a bachelor of science in nursing, Humphreys says Norwich has been the perfect environment for her to learn in. Over the past three years, she’s risen to the rank of president in the University’s Student Nursing Association and formed a plan to enter the field of forensic nursing upon graduation. And while she’ll be the first in her family to graduate from college and plans on taking a tough job in a tough field, Humphreys says she’s not too concerned because Norwich has taught her well.
“You’re constantly being challenged to look at the big picture,” she said. “I feel confident that when I graduate, I will be very knowledgeable in my field and I’ll be prepared to lead. And that’s what Norwich does, it trains you to be a leader.”
